“This course focuses on basic coastal navigation skills, which is way beyond the minimum requirements set by the state in their shortest classes. Mark Dam, who is also a course instructor.

“We can say that it covers the state requirements for the certificate, but it also covers ‘radio, ropes and maps’ – which is a short way of saying that there are many major topics. that can be covered when you have a course that meets over a period of several weeks. We use “Radio, Ropes and Maps” to draw attention to the fact that although these topics are not covered in short state courses, the squadron believes they are essential to good seamanship in our area. of Long Island Sonner. “

The course covers the basics of boat handling and seamanship, equipment and regulations, an introduction to charts and aids to navigation, basic piloting and rules of navigation. The course is intended for general and practical matters of interest to all boaters and is not intended for sailing or sailing. Graduates of the course receive a diploma qualifying for the Boating Safety Certificate, as well as Coastal Boater Approval and New Safe Water Skiing Approval.

Coastal Boater Approval recognizes students who take courses more comprehensive than the minimum requirements.

State Boating Safety Certificate regulations apply to all operators of state-registered vessels, regardless of age.

The cost of the class ($ 95) includes the textbook, graphics, and plotting equipment, with significant discounts available for multiple members of the same household.
