Police arrested a man on Saturday for allegedly raping his underage daughter-in-law at their rented house in Palam Vihar in Gurugram, officials said.

Police arrested a man on Saturday for allegedly raping his underage daughter-in-law at their rented house in Palam Vihar in Gurugram, officials said.

The 11-year-old girl was home alone on Friday when the incident happened, police said, adding that the incident was discovered when the victim’s mother returned home around 8.30pm that day.

Based on a complaint file from the mother of the victim, a case was filed against the suspect under section 506 of the Indian Penal Code (punishment for criminal intimidation) and section 6 (punishment for sexual assault with aggravated penetration) of the protection of children against sexual violence. Offenses Act (POCSO) at Palam Vihar police station on Saturday, police said.

Police say the suspect is about 29 years old and married the woman about five years ago. Her first husband died about six years ago, they added.

After learning of the incident from her daughter, the woman confronted her husband, but he threatened her with dire consequences if she went to the police.

Inspector Jitender Kumar, Police Station Officer (SHO) of Palam Vihar Police Station, said the suspect was arrested at his home on Saturday morning. A medical examination has been carried out on the victim, and the police will register his statement before a magistrate shortly.
