Chennai: Among the students who sat for the class X exam at a school in the city on Friday, the first day, was a 15-year-old girl whose marriage to a 24-year-old man had been interrupted shortly earlier by a team of police officers and officials from the child protection committee.
Later, the groom, F Royappan, and the girl’s parents, T Purushothaman, 43, and P Ponmani, 37, appeared before Child Welfare Committee (CWC) officials and pledged to wait until the girl is 18, the prescribed age. by the government, to marry her off.
Earlier on the basis of specific advice, R Arul and Poongkodi from Indian Child Welfare Association and CWC officials along with a team from Arumbakkam Police went to Vadapalani Marriage Hall where preparations were underway.
Inspector G Prabhu and his team terminated the marriage after CWC officials reviewed the documents, including the birth certificate produced by the girl’s parents, and confirmed that she was a minor. She is a student at a public high school for girls.
Questioned by the team, the bride expressed her wish to appear for the examination which was to begin soon. She put on her uniform and rushed to school and wrote the language assignment.
During questioning, the girl’s father, Purushothaman, told police that he lost his job at a private company during the Covid-19 pandemic and decided to marry off his daughter.
